What you need: Passport or EU ID + NIE (mandatory) + proof of address (Spanish or foreign). Non-residents can open accounts as no residente — some banks restrict services. Online banks (BBVA, Sabadell) often easier for non-residents; neobanks (N26, Wise, Revolut — all EEA-regulated) work with foreign address.
Derecho a la cuenta básica de pago (Banco de España): Under RD 164/2019 (implementing EU Directive 2014/92), all persons legally resident in the EU have the right to a basic payment account — any bank must offer this if you have a legal address in Spain.
Tasa de interés de demora (legal default rate): Set annually by the Banco de España. For 2025: published in BOE. Commercial debts (Ley 3/2004): ECB rate + 8pp.
